Born in Bonn, Ulrich Panzer completed his studies as a master student at the Münster Art Academy in the 1990s but has worked as an artist in the last twenty years primarily in Canada. We are delighted to present his work—which draws upon the synaesthetic interplay between painting and music—once again in Germany for the first time.
“I do not approach painting as a scientific experiment; rather, I value the diverse personal reactions of the viewers. During the 2015 exhibition ‘The Blind Man’s Song,’ there were several visitors with various forms of synesthesia—such as the perception of color and scent. Some walked around giving titles to individual works, such as *Rave*, *Lullaby*, or *Portal*. Some visitors felt inspired to practice yoga in the exhibition space or to linger in deep contemplation before the paintings. Singers and other musicians frequently ask if they may improvise near the artworks. All of this is appropriate and very welcome, even if not explicitly intended. I know that my paintings can open gateways to deeper levels of ‘seeing’.”
