Düsseldorf artist Martin Schwenk presents a new installation titled “Disposing,” conceived specifically for the glass pavilion in Grugapark. Drainpipes crisscross the space of the glass pavilion, closed at their ends by miniature photographs. These images represent a section of nature and seem like reminiscences from a bygone era. This is a reference to how our memory works: When we look at our old photos, we realize that they have become a condensate of our memories, while the rest — the particularity of the situation, the people around it, the sounds, the smells, etc. — has largely been discarded by our memory. Thus, on the one hand, disposal as a necessary part of our everyday lives becomes an artistic motif, but on the other hand, disposal on a mental level also becomes a focus, namely when we keep our memories alive in our minds, prioritize them, or even completely suppress certain memories. In this reading, Martin Schwenk’s installation becomes a parable for our culture of remembrance.

Martin Schwenk (* 1960 in Bonn) is a German sculptor, installation artist, and draftsman. He studied from 1981 to 1988 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he was a master student of Günther Uecker. Schwenk has been a professor of sculpture at the Mainz University of Art and Design since 2011.
