From Art School to Gallery
Students from the University of Fine Arts (HBK) Essen present their work at Galerie Obrist
Diving into Gallery Work
This marks the fourth time the “Inside Gallery” course has been held at HBK Essen, each culminating in an exhibition and the presentation of an exhibition catalog. Students gain professional insight into the inner workings of a gallery. Gallerist and art historian Torsten Obrist offers a behind-the-scenes look and addresses practical questions such as: How is an exhibition planned? Which artworks are selected and arranged for the final hang? How is an exhibition curated? How are prices for the artworks determined? Throughout the semester, the students put the theoretical knowledge they have acquired into practice. The seminar takes place on-site at the gallery under the guidance of Torsten Obrist and Carsten Gliese, Professor of Photography/Media Art at HBK Essen.
WHERE IS MY MIND?
Starting July 3, 2026, the students will showcase their work—much of which was created specifically for this exhibition. Preparations have been underway since early February 2025, including the launch of a dedicated Instagram channel: @whereismymind_exhibition.
From the defamiliarization of everyday objects to expressionist and figurative painting, abstract photography, and beyond—this is the scope of the exhibition theme: WHERE IS MY MIND? is interpreted across a broad spectrum and through a variety of individual artistic positions.
