We present the outstanding Dutch artist with his new “Diaries” and his second solo exhibition in our gallery.
Layer upon layer upon layer upon layer: Sander Reijgers builds his Diaries by superimposing monochrome color fields. With each layer, the volume of the image increases, and after more than a thousand layers, the height has already grown to over three centimeters. Each previous layer is overlaid by the new one and is only perceptible at the edges of the painting. The final result is a monochrome painting seen from the front, while from the side, a colorful superimposition of paint layers is visible. Each layer represents a day, each day a specific experience or event — a “Diary,” in essence.
Sander Reijgers is fascinated by the material and the act of painting. He applies the layers of paint calmly, limited only by time (the need for the paint to dry) and the shape of the canvas.
Reijgers patiently observes this process, a disciplined servant of his own work. The paint follows the act of painting and the roller used to apply it. The structure of the painting emerges entirely autonomously from the constant repetition of the act.
